Fostering a Love of Learning

Ages 6 months through Pre-K

Philosophy

Derbyshire Preschool is a developmental program that nurtures the social-emotional, physical, intellectual, spiritual, and creative development of each child. Derbyshire Preschool is a mission outreach of Derbyshire Baptist Church.  We strive to provide a loving and nurturing environment for children, parents, and staff in which they can experience love, trust, acceptance, and achievement.  We believe that all children are unique and develop an understanding of the world and themselves in age appropriate play, both planned and spontaneous. Our goal is to lay a foundation for a life-long love of learning and to build a strong relationship with the whole family by providing support and partnership.

Curriculum

Derbyshire Preschool is a developmental program that nurtures the social-emotional, physical, intellectual, spiritual, and creative development of each child. Derbyshire Preschool is a mission outreach of Derbyshire Baptist Church.  We strive to provide a loving and nurturing environment for children, parents, and staff in which they can experience love, trust, acceptance, and achievement.  We believe that all children are unique and develop an understanding of the world and themselves in age appropriate play, both planned and spontaneous. Our goal is to lay a foundation for a life-long love of learning and to build a strong relationship with the whole family. Our curriculum is designed to actively engage children in hands-on, multi-sensory activities that are meaningful to them. Developmentally appropriate practice emphasizes that activities should be both challenging and achievable for children.  We use the award winning, research-based Handwriting Without Tears curriculum for 2 year olds - PreKindergarten.  Children are introduced to "Mat Man," a fun character who teaches them key school readiness concepts in math, reading and writing using exciting fun music, manipulatives, and books.

Curriculum is based on units that are relevant to children's lives and their world, and all areas of the curriculum are integrated throughout the day. Strong literature provides the foundation for carefully planned activities that are often done in small groups where children have the opportunity to explore specific concepts with their teacher and peers.

We believe that play should be the center of a well-balanced curriculum, and provide children the opportunities to develop the necessary skills and knowledge essential for later school success. Opportunities for conflict resolution, problem solving, enhancing pro-social behaviors, and developing processing skills greatly influence intellectual development and are crucial for children.

Derbyshire Preschool implements a curriculum that fosters:
  • Concrete experiences in math, science and language development
  • An environment that encourages children to develop a sense of curiosity and inquiry
  • Activities that are meaningful to children and respect how they learn
  • A daily schedule that balances child initiated activities and teacher planned activities
  • A nurturing social climate where children learn to solve their problems peacefully
  • A safe environment in which children can explore, experiment, and take risks
  • Respect for individual differences and learning styles
  • Foundational skills to promote later school success
  • Opportunities to build community and learn about Christian values family by providing support and partnership.

Our Staff

The teachers at Derbyshire Preschool are selected on the basis of classroom educational experience as well as personality, love for children, and ability to work effectively with young children, either individually or in small groups. Our highly qualified staff is both experienced and well educated, many having their Masters in Education.  The curriculum is guided by their deep understanding of how children learn and develop both intellectually and socially.

The staff's passion for the field of early childhood development drives them to attend an educational in-service and workshops at least on a yearly basis.  They are also trained in infant and child CPR and First Aid. Each teacher must submit an annual statement from a practicing physician stating that they are free from any disability that would hinder their work with children. Background checks are required for all teachers as we strictly follow Virginia Department of Social Services guidelines for a "religious exempt" preschool setting.

Classrooms

Classrooms are designed to meet the specific needs of each child. Derbyshire Preschool (DPS) has many classrooms for the children to explore including an art room and STEM Lab, music room, large room for indoor recess and sports, a bike hall, a "Wiggles and Giggles" room for our Cherubs.
