Pastoral Care at DBC

Pastoral care is congregation-based at Derbyshire.  Members turn to one another to offer concern, prayer, encouragement, and assistance during times of difficulty.  This occurs naturally and is simply part of who we are, as we live together in community.

Some members are set apart as deacons.  They are assigned according to Sunday School classes and other natural groupings in the congregation, in order to provide an intentional ministry of spiritual leadership and pastoral care.

A significant work of our pastor and other staff ministers is to care for members during times of birth and death, celebration and tragedy, marriage and divorce, and spiritual or moral struggle.  They also are available to provide short-term counseling, and also to make referrals to qualified counselors and agencies in the community.  A Minister of Pastoral Visitation makes regular visits to homebound members and to those in the hospitals, retirement communities, and nursing homes.

A pastoral care ministry that is unique to Derbyshire is the Robert Scott Aronson Grief Ministry.  Founded in 2004, this ministry is directed by Beth Smith, who is a grief minister with 17 years of experience in hospice bereavement counseling, consulting, and education.  This ministry offers individual and family grief counseling, grief education seminars and workshops, grief support groups, and training for grief ministry throughout the year.
